"You Must Be Born Again" -- Jesus Christ

Matthew 4:4

It is written, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes out of the mouth of God".

It is not the food that we eat that will sustain us, but the Word of God that gives eternal life.

Matthew 4:17

From that time, Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Repenting is an essential quality in the life of a believer.  Repentance is two seperate actions.  The first is a recognition of how much you have sinned against God through your sin.  You begin to realize you deserve eternal punishment in hell, and your only response is to cry out to God for his mercy.  The second part of repentance is a turning away from future sin.  Now that you have an understanding of the sinfulness of sin you will take precautions in avoiding those things that lead to sin.

Matthew 4:19

And He (Jesus) said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men."

When you receive the call from God to follow, and are now commited to doing the will of God, one of your responsibliities will be as a "fisher of men".  There is no poles or tackle required, but the Word of God and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Matthew 5:43-45

You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.'  But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven.  For He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

A quality that is found in a Chrisitian is that of sincere love.  But not just a love for their family, friends, and neighbors, but also their enemies.  The love that you possess for your enemy is seen through your prayers and the way to treat your enemy from moment to moment.

Matthew 9:10-13

And as Jesus reclined at the table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and His disciples.  And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to His disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"  But when He heard it, He said, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.  Go and learn what this means, 'I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.' For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners."

The purpuse in Jesus coming into the world was to be a perfect sacrifice who took the wrath of God for sin.  But Jesus did not come for everyone's sin, because some people think in their minds that they have met the requirements of righteousness themselves.  In this verse we see that Jesus clarifies His purpose, that He came for those who recognize their sin and seek His mercy and not for those who rely upon their own goodness.

Matthew 10:28

And do not feat those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.  Rather fear Him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

For the children of God, we understand that this life is just a short time and then we will spend eterninty with Jesus Christ.  This is significant because we know that whatever persecution and tribulation that comes is just for a moment.  And the manner of death that we expereince will only lead us into the arms of Jesus Christ.  It is because of that fact, that we do not forsake the sharing of the Gospel of Christ even when our life is being threatened.
